What camera(s) do you shoot with? And what are you bringing to EP this year?

My main camera is a Canon 450d:

I'm still using the kit lens (hoping to upgrade it when I have the chance) but also picked up the Canon 50-250mm IS zoom and the Canon 50mm 1.8

For film, I have a Canon 300v I got on eBay for a fiver, which is usually mounted with a Mark I Canon 28-80 USM lens though I sometimes use the 50 on it too.


My prettiest camera to date is the Soviet Leica knock off, the Fed 3(b):

It's completely manual, has no light meter or electronics, made some time between 1963 and 1980 and it's lens is slightly radioactive!

And ordered specifically for Electric Picnic 2010, my new Canon Canonet GIII QL 17:


Canonet was the choice for EP for it's wide aperature, fixed lens (according to the organisers anything with changeable lenses is considered 'pro' gear and restricted to those with press photo passes), compact size and fantastically sharp lens. Have ordered a few rolls of Fuji Neopan 400CN and Kodak Portra 800 for it and have a load of the free fuji 200 to use up too

If anyone wants to make a bid on the Diana Mini (boxed cause my old one broke and they sent me a new one) go for it...

Never quite got the attraction to the Diana, just shoot slightly out of focus and you get the same effect on any other camera!

The Pentax makes me want to puke. Sort of camera that's probably never had more than a handful of rolls of film through it. The amount of glass you could buy for the same price as one of them!

I have Nikon D40 and I love it more than life itself.

I would quite like a little Diana just to play around with the fish eye instead of getting an actual fish eye lens.

The lomo stuff is shite imo.
I have the fisheye one too (forgot about that). flash is utterly pointless on it.

i want ask is there a preferable brand that is generally ahead of the rest? Lumix Canon Pentax or is it much of a muchness?

It's much of a muchness when you start of, to be honest.

I swear by Nikon, but only because I started with one and know them inside out. They are generally regarded as the Pro option, but they do great starters too, like the d40, D70, d90 etc. That said Canon are great too - and their equipment (lenses, flashes) etc are generally a small bit cheaper.

Pentax and Sony had some bad times in the DSLR world lately - the former having their recent ad filmed entirely with a Nikon camera... But they are good.

If you're looking for something in particulat (for music, general walkabouts) etc., lemme know and I'll do me best to point you in the right direction!

They've stopped designing cameras with a manual mode in that price bracket so it's a good old choice, if a little bit bulky.
I've yet to f*ck about with shutter speed but in the non-manual modes my main gripe is you can't do quick snaps and have to remain quite still, but if you do, it takes great shots in good lighting.

Canon or Nikon. Very little between them so go to a shop and take a look at the entry level models (ignore the 1000d in Canon, look at the 500d or 550d instead there's too little difference in price to make the inferior 1000d worthwhile).

See which feels right in your hands and buy that one.

If you're prepared to learn how to use a camera and don't mind the inconvenience of film, there are brilliant cameras available for peanuts these days. The second camera in my list, the Canon EOS 300V can be had with a decent walkaround lens for about €50 on ebay!
