I ran the first km in 3min 40sec, and thats while ducking and diving around people walking/jogging, it wasnt far off a sprint!

There's a half marathon on here in August I'm thinking of doing, anyone got any advice for training?

I'd be pretty fit, could get through a 90 minute football match without too much hassle

Don't do a lot of distance running though, just go jogging infrequently

there's a few ways you could do it

probably the best way to do it would be to pick a plan depending on your level, how much time you have and how many days a week you're willing to run

http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7 ... -0,00.html

another option is to join a athletics club and let them tell you what to do

otherwise you can just do it yourself, maybe use one of the plans to give you an idea of the sort of distances you should be covering in training and then just doing what feels comfortable. The first thing I learned was to not train hard. 3-4 easy runs are better than 2 hard ones and you've little or no chance of injuring yourself running easy so you'll be able to run more often

if you can play 90 minutes in footy you're probably fit enough to run a 10k, unfortunately they are different types of fitness, i completed a 10k after a full footy season in 48.40min and then after 6 weeks running training I done one in 42.40min

at the moment I do interval training on tuesdays and thursdays and a long run at the weekends which would be about 10-14k. I should probably run more often but it suits me for the moment the way it is

not a bad start

went back jogging yesterday for the first time since i tore my groin 2 months ago. only a short jog round my estate but got through with only the samllest of discomfort, think it was just stiffness in the groin. Thank god. Gonna keep it up for the next few weeks then hopefully i can go back to playing astro soon (well, prob after the Euros).

played astro on monday for the first time since nov when I sprained my ankle badly. despite running 3 times a week and racing only just over a week ago I can barely walk! its amazing the amount of muscles you use playing footy that you dont use when running! I have literally pain all over my legs except for the calves

Now that i can run again im gonna cut down on carbs, so no pizza at the weekends, even when hungover, gonna stop eating potatoes. im gonna wait til lafter the Euros though cos while im there its gonna be hard to keep up a proper diet

On my back days at the gym I do four sets of 10 pull ups, last two sets with added weight

Then after every following exercise I'll do ten more pull ups

easiest way to get yourself bang up to speed with them

Good to hear ye've reduced the bread intake, although if ye can ditch the sandwich at night itd be even better
(when you say night do ye mean 6pm or 10pm?)

Ye dont have to give up a Pizza on the weekend completely
If its just to lose some weight and feel fitter ye can still have yer Pizza, just not every weekend
What I used to do was eat sensibly Mon-Sat and on a Sunday have a big dirty Pizza,
and rotate that the followin week with a Vindaloo or Kung Pow or whatever.

Also replace whatever yer drinkin way borin old water.
(outwith boozers obviously)

I can actually do 110 pull ups and 100 dips. Both pull ups and dips were done in 1 go, seperate nights ofcourse.

This time last year a was doin 3 sets of 50 dips and between 3 sets of 40-50 pull ups,
Id phased the dips outta ma routine for a little while but thats the progress Ive made in 12 months.

Ma next step for pull ups and dips will be to strap 10kg round ma waist and take it from there.

I have my sandwich at bout 10pm alright.
Booze is the worst I know, but i cant give it up. (depressing realisation there)
