I've done it twice. It's class.

Did it a year ago in a camper van. Absolutely class.
if you're short on time though, the stretch of road from Hofn around to Akureyri is alot of driving for less rewards than along the south coast. Really liked Akureryi though.
But we ended up forgoing alot of the stuff out along the NW peninsulas. Shivo might advise better if he's been twice.

Go in winter, wait till mid november until the ice caves have formed, and pay the few bob to hike a glacier. Stay out on the glacier overnight if you can.

I'll definitely go back. Its just a class country.

Was an Icelandic guy on a course I was on before christmas and he was telling me how much the tourist numbers have increased in the last few years and I'll let wiki take it from here
According to the Icelandic Tourist Board, the total number of overnight stays by foreign visitors to Iceland grew from 595,000 in 2000 to 2.1 million in 2010, before rising to 4.4 million in 2014

Those are crazy numbers

Jesus, they're crazy numbers. There's only 300,00 people on the island.
We went with Wow Air, who introduced new direct flights from Ireland anyway, made it way more accessible from here.

Maybe on a Vespa.

Wow air's return flight times leave a lot to be desired.

When I was there 2007, neither I nor the guy I went with could drive. But we stayed in one of the bigger hostels and just got talking to people. We found two people who had drivers licenses and were up for the road trip within no time.

Knowing all the prices/details in advance regarding the car hire, route, accommodation, etc, will have you find people in no time.

The 2nd time I was there was in late May and the only time it was really cold was on top of a glacier and whale watching. Neither of which are really essential.

Anyone any budget accommodation tips for NYC?

Gonna spend 6 nights there in May and hotels look crazy expensive.
