American Honey
I had reservations (le boeuf, running time) but ended up really enjoying this. Lovely cinematography, some great moments, could do with being shorter but the ramble is worth taking.

It's a year old so maybe people have seen this, but fantastic, legit-feeling mashup.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller getting thrown under the bus by Disney over the Han Solo row.

There are two sides to every story, but it does sound like they were making shite of it.

"Ace Ventura in space", the article says.

Ron Howard is a safe bet from Disney.

I thought they left in a big huff when they could have kept going? Obviously directors don't like taking shit from studios but when you get into one of these big Disney tentpoles like SW or MCU its inevitable.

Whether they left or were sacked, between not delivering the rushes they were asked for, changing the script on the fly and gleaning an "Ace Ventura in space" performance out of Alden thingy, it sounds like they were taking the piss.

The article I read points out, they're clearly strategic leaks by Disney to keep the fans on their side. But if the latter is true, thank god they got the chop.

I only heard the /film podcast talking about it and they reckoned it was basically the same situation Gareth Edwards ended up in for Rogue One but he stayed (at least officially), dealt with the loss of control and came out of it unscathed. L&M seem to have been offered a similar situation but baulked at it and left in a very public way. I'd say Disney are going after them because of that.

Kong: Skull Island was better than I expected. Decent Sunday matinee material. Brie Larson seems to be everywhere at the moment.

Baby Driver is a strange one. Really wanted to enjoy it but there's a few roadblocks for me.
It's really clean cut for a heist movie, it plays like an Apple commercial, all squeaky clean with dancing momentum. Feels like a John Hughes movie in parts. The dancing in the opening scenes with Baby walking down the street made me fear that this was veering into La La Land territory. Thankfully it doesn't go full song and dance. The soundtracks syncopation with the sound effects is novel but it wore thin for me. I enjoyed the chase scenes, they are well executed. The opening scene in S2Ep1 of Preacher was more enjoyable.

It's not a bad film and it's refreshing to see something try to be different, just didn't hit the mark for me.

Really enjoyed Baby Driver. Given the hype I probably deep down wanted to find a lot of faults with it but thought it was great fun. I can take or leave Edgar Wright's stuff, thought The World's End was awful but have mostly enjoyed his other stuff, this is definitely his best movie imo. Loved Hamm and Foxx in it.

am in love with Gal Gadot now though

Didn't like it. It's better than the Snyder DCU movies but it's still about as good as the worst MCU movies.

I saw Transformers The Last Knight on a free screening last week. having only seen the first one when it initially came out, i was a bit lost but then again those movies weren't for plot. ah well, ignore all the plot and watch the big robots knock the snot out of each other. one problem, there was a lot of plot and little robot fights. the movie felt like it was about 3 hours long and by the time i'd switched off we were still nowhere near getting to the end battle. Avoid.
