Read Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Im not usually a fan of Sci fi books, only really ever liked Enders Game and Brasyl. But this was excellent. About 7 people on a pilgrammage to a world called Hyperion. Its about to be the centre of a huge battle and it holds a being called the Shrike who is moving backwards through time to a point where he escapes his cage on Hyperion. Each character has a story about why they are on the pilgrammage. The universe building was something else. Really excellent. Peoples stories were only about 60-80 pages but the universe is so fleshed out through all their stories. Couldnt put it down. maybe started a bit slow but one of my favourite books in ages.
Trying to read the Epic of Gilgamesh now. The tablets it was carved on have been ruined so loads isnt known. Its a fucking pain reading the thing cos there are lines and words left out all over the place. Its really interesting though to see the myths a lot of others are meant to be based on.

I see the final book of The Passage trilogy has now got a release date, 26th May 2016. That'll be 4 years since The Twelve and 6 since the original.
It's been a long time coming and better be worth the wait....

Just finished It. What a fucking book. Goes mad at the end but thats to be expected. One incredibly weird part that just seems crazy that defo didnt make the films.BadTurtle wrote:It's great. Like a blueprint for It.
I can see how Salems Lot would be like a blueprint alright. Especially the world building. You hear how locations are characters so often but its never been truer than in It

Only out on Kindle so far, I think.
First couple of chapters made me wish I'd re-read the previous books recently cos I was forgetting things, but read the summaries on Wiki so back up to speed and enjoying it now.

Read it anyway. It was fairly shite.
Started The Running Man. Reading the introduction about King using the alter ego Richard Bachman to write the book. Smack bang in the middle, with no warning, is what happens at the end of the book. Unbelievable.

Ready Player One
I'm glad it's finished. Found the narrator to be really obnoxious and the love interest stuff is really tedious. Like it's written by a teenage boy. The video game stuff and general plot might make for an alright film. Script will need a lot of work.

I think its meant to sound like that. I enjoyed all the pop culture references. Its pure fantastical release, I didnt take the book too seriously.i_ate_cats wrote:Ready Player One

Started the Stand. Didnt realise Id bought an extended edition. Fucking 1400 pages. Christ. I like King, but its too much. Ill finish it cos Ive wanted to read the story for a while, but its more effort than I was hoping. Gonna read one or two of John Ajvide Lindqvist books next.

if one was to read their first Stephen King book, what book do people recommend starting on?
First one I read was Salems Lot. I liked it a lot. It starts off a bit slow, but he does some incredible world building before letting it all kick off. I dont find his books scary though, thats one thing to know going in. Most are just good supernatural thrillers. So be aware of that first.
Actually I started with the Dark Tower series first, but thats not a horror of any kind. Well worth it though. The first one is very short too.
IT was my favourite of his books. Its fucking brilliant, but it goes a bit off the wall. Salems Lot is a bit more grounded
