To be fair, it's pretty much only Pete who's saying it's not absolutely brilliant
But it's also worth remembering those same people saying that it's absolutely brilliant are the ones who were saying that about MK Wii,which was probably the worst in the series (although by no means bad).

MK8 is a very good game, it's just an identikit mario kart game, again. the "big changes and additions" are negligible in reality, online is still weak enough (because the Japanese still haven't gotten their heads around that side of things yet) and the series has been bypassed by Sega in the time since the last game

Mario Kart Wii is definitely not the weakest in the series. The GBA one is horribly lightweight, and I'm not a big fan of the GC one either, despite the 2 player swap dynamic.

So Ubisoft sent out promotional packages of Watchdogs which came in a black box which beeped when you opened it and with a note stuck on them saying "Check your voicemail."

Some person in a newspaper in Sydney got one and didn't have a voicemail so ended up ringing the bomb squad

Pete was right about Watch Dogs so far anyway.

The first hour or so is abysmal. Its so boring and complicated because there is so much shit all over the screen all the time.

Now that ive gotten into it more (played for about 4/5 hours) its really good. Nothing groundbreaking but good enough craic

Played MK8 solidly all weekend

I'm loving it. It's Mario Kart, except with nicer graphics, what's not to enjoy?

I'd have agreed had Sega & Sonic Transformed not upped the ante in the kart racer space. If they actually put some marketing spend into the next one (if there is a next one) they'll knock all the wind out of MK's sails

Hardly, Pete. Nintendo could release an empty box with Mario Karts name on it and it'd sell bucketloads. Sega will never get Sonic outselling it.

You forget that nobody actually bought the Wii U. MK8 is almost guaranteed to be the lowest selling MK game of all time, just because fuck all people have the Wii U.

There's a good chance Sega & Sonic Transformed will have more sales because it's multi platform

*edit*

also, given that Transformed was a freebie on PS+ on Vita, it's likely got more players than any MK game besides MK Wii ever had

There's a polish to MK that just isn't present in Sonic Transformed. It's not just graphics, either. The tracks are classic Mario Kart, whereas the Sonic ones were a little forgettable

I don't think I'd rate Sonic above MK at all

I definitely would. The MK8 tracks are a bit of a non event for me. It looks stunning, but the drift system in transformed is far superior, and it handles air/water transitions a lot better. That said, MK8 is by no means a bad game or anything, it's great, I just think that it's pretty much come as far as it can now, and without some ballsy moves or massive changes any further titles will be a bit pointless.

That'll be a long way off anyway, Nintendo does one MK game per system, and almost never at launch, so we'll probably be at least 4 years before we see another

I've long since decided that Pete's opinion on games is irrelevant so I wouldnt argue with it lads

MK8 boosted Wii U sales by over 600%. I think Nintendo will be resting fairly easy.
What's Sonics lifetime sales crossplatform now? It crossed a million in early 2013, I'd be surprised if it broke 2 million. MK8 has good enough chance of doing that, considering the last console version sold 35 million. Its arguably the 2nd most popular IP after Pokemon.

I can't wait to get a Wii U once the full set of first party titles come out, presuming there'll be a price drop/saturated 2nd hand market by then.
